Cyber Essentials: a plain-English guide for Essex businesses

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme that shows your business has the basic technical controls in place to defend against the most common cyber attacks. What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials was created by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). It focuses on five practical controls that, together, stop the overwhelming majority of "commodity" attacks. There are two levels: Cyber Essentials (a verified self-assessment) and Cyber Essentials Plus (the same controls, independently tested by an assessor).

The five controls

1. Firewalls. Properly configured boundary and device firewalls between your systems and the internet.
2. Secure configuration. Removing default passwords and unnecessary software, and locking devices down sensibly.
3. User access control. Giving people only the access they need, protecting admin accounts and using multi-factor authentication.
4. Malware protection. Antivirus / endpoint protection and controls on what can run.
5. Security update management. Keeping operating systems and software patched, with unsupported software removed.

None of these are exotic. The value of the scheme is that it forces you to prove all five are genuinely in place across your whole organisation.

Cyber Essentials vs Cyber Essentials Plus

Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment questionnaire, reviewed and verified by a certifying body. Cyber Essentials Plus covers the same five controls but adds a hands-on technical audit. An assessor checks your devices and network to confirm the controls really work. Plus carries more weight with contract-holders and insurers, and many organisations start with the base certification and move to Plus within a few months.

How much does Cyber Essentials cost, and how long does it take?

The certification fee for the base scheme is modest (it scales with organisation size), and Plus adds an assessor's testing fee. The bigger investment is usually the preparation: closing any gaps in patching, MFA, device configuration and account management before you certify. For a well-run small business that already has managed IT in place, base certification can often be achieved in a couple of weeks; businesses starting from scratch should allow longer to remediate first.
